$9 JetAmerica tickets on sale

A startup low-cost air carrier today will begin selling $9 seats on flights out of Lansing.

Not for everyone, mind you. Clearwater, Fla.-based JetAmerica Aviation Inc. is limiting the bargain prices to nine seats - and the $9 fare is a one-way price that doesn't include extra fees for things such as baggage and in-flight food service.

Nonetheless, the carrier plans to start service July 13, flying from Lansing's Capital Region International Airport to Newark, N.J., and Melboune, Fla.

And once the nine $9 seats are taken, Chief Executive Officer John Weikle said, the carrier still plans to offer fares at least 50 percent lower than rivals.

JetAmerica spokesman Bryan Glazer estimated that would amount to about $79 for a one-way ticket, on average.

"The people of Lansing have not been afforded the kind of air service that people should be getting. They've not been afforded low fares or big jets," he said.
Leasing the jet

JetAmerica will offer nonstop flights on a 189-seat Boeing 737-800 jet.

It also plans to start service in Toledo, Ohio, and South Bend, Ind.

The company is leasing the jet and subcontracting pilots and flight attendants from charter airline Miami Air International, Glazer said.

JetAmerica hopes to have a fleet of at least four aircraft in a year.

The airline will use existing airport employees for ground services, baggage, gate attendants and ticket counter work.
